Concentration #6

Old Soul

3" x 2"

White Charcoal, Colored Pencil, Watercolor Brushes

You're an old soul.

Life has come and gone.

Now all that is left to do,

Say goodbye.

But everyone still has so much to see.

You feel you life was so long,

But compared it was so short.

To think, you'll be forgotten.

Replaced by someone younger.

I drew inspiration for this poem and this art piece from the passing of my dog a little over a year ago. I was trying to think about how it might feel to be forgotten or replaced. I drew a dog skeleton and made the head droop and had the tail sag to convey sadness in the dog. I wanted to make the piece split so that you could see the skeleton underground and also have the owner and the other dog above ground. Using white charcoal, I colored the bones and used a black colored pencil to add a dirty look to them as if the dog has been buried for a while. I used black colored pencil to draw the dog above ground and shaded it with the white charcoal. For the feet of the person I used tan and peach colored pencils and blended these two together to try and show different shadows and highlights. In the background I used watercolor to show the different levels of ground, grass, and sky.
