Whatchama Draw It

Mr. Crow

7" x 10"

HB, 4B, 6B Graphite

The prompt behind this piece states "Draw a scarecrow that is scared of crows". I went based off of my knowledge of what a stereotypical scarecrow looked like to me. I chose this prompt over my other pick because I felt it would allow me to express my abilities through a clear picture. The prompt was specific, but also let me create my own scenario.

I created this piece using graphite pencils. First I used a HB pencil to sketch out my idea on paper. Then I shaded the scarecrow, clouds, and wheat with 4B and 6B for a range in the value of my piece. Using a tortillon I blended these different layers of graphite and to add detail to the shirt. I started with the head of my scarecrow and slowly build his body and hat. In order to add the fact that he is scared of crows, I added figures flying in the background and also put two crows in the foreground landing on the scarecrow. This is to amplify the fact that the scarecrow is scared of crows, but they aren't scared of him. In order to convey the fear in his face, I drew his mouth hanging open and gave him wide eyes. The wheat was used to balance the piece as the clouds and the birds took up the space at the top, but there was nothing using the bottom border.
