Concentration #5

Inner Rage

4" x 5"

Watercolor, Ink Pen

I wouldn't put it past you

to make my blood boil.

Smile disappearing as my brows crease.

I wouldn't put it past you

to make me blush with rage.

Fists clenching as my teeth grind.

Try as I might, calm will never come.

Seeing too much red.

Can't stop now.

This piece was heavily influenced by the emotions I was feeling at the time of creating the poem. Anger is a powerful force and I wanted to capture it both in words and in art. I knew that the best way to show emotion in my piece would be to do a portrait. This would also allow me to improve my technique and skill regarding facial features.

I lightly sketched everything on a section of toned paper. I chose a light tan for the paper because I felt it would give me a good base for a skin color. I then went through and added shadows and depth with the watercolor. I pulled the line, "Seeing too much red." from my poem and decided that I would color the eyes red in order to tie it to the poem. For the background, I used an earlier suggestion from my peers and chose a few words from my poem that I felt were strong and visual. I continued using those same words throughout the whole background. I learned that it wasn't as hard to construct a portrait as I had previously thought and I wouldn't mind doing more or even a series.
