Slabs

These tile pieces were my first project in ceramics and was designed to be our starting point in the class. We were to create two tiles and experiment with glazes on one while doing sgraffito on the other. I started with my sgraffito tile and drew honeycombs and decided to a add a bee to the tile and put more combs around him. I then put 3 layers of yellow underglaze on the surfaces that I had wanted to highlight while applying a layer of black wash over the honeycombs and the black part of the bee. After completing these layers I added a coat of clear glaze over the whole tile to make it shine. For the glaze test we were to choose 4 different glazes out of the many that there were. Then we made 4 columns and 4 rows, one for each color. The glazes I picked were PC-49, C-10, PC-29, and PC-23 going left to right and then up to down. These glazes were all cool colors and verily light colors. I looked at each label carefully as I wanted 4 that may look good together. Some of theses color combinations turned out different than I had originally expected, but I do want to try many of them on a future pot. I ended up have an extra row at the bottom of my tile which is unfortunate as it confuses me sometimes as I look for the right glaze combination. Overall I enjoyed this project and felt it was a good beginning for my ceramics skills.
