Concentration #2

For this second project I stuck to my concentration of skulls and mental illnesses. This sculpture represents the illness PTSD. I used paper for this project and layered it with foam board in between. I painted the paper in order to control my colors easier and make them bolder. Then I drew random outline that fit into the shape that came before it. I cut it all out and then stacked it on a cardboard backing from a picture frame. After I finished the skull and explosion out of paper, I decided to drill holes in the backing. These are supposed to represent bullet holes as a soldier getting shot at. Then inside the holes I put crumples of colored, see-through, plastic representing the explosions from the bullets.

When people think about ptsd they think of soldiers in the military who get ptsd from the fighting. I decided to stay with this common thinking and use explosions to represent war and fighting going on around the skull. The colors are very important in displaying the destruction and harm that I'm going for. Then I wanted to use multiple materials and create a different texture so I added the plastic. I drilled the holes randomly which made the sculpture have informal balance.
