In this project we were tasked with making 2 spheres out of pinch pots, meaning that we would combine 2 pinch pots to make one sphere. Each sphere had to have a theme to it. One was to be inspired by nature and the other had to be inspired by something man-made. The first idea that came to my mind was to make a pig for my natural sphere. I started with a sketch which I make into the real thing with two medium-sized pinch pots. I added the ears, eyes, nose, tail, and legs with separate pieces of clay that I attached. Then I went through with a pink underglaze over the entire sculpture and added a black layer of underglaze over the eye and the nose. After the underglaze dried I went over it with a layer of clear glaze to make it shine. For my man-made inspired sphere I decided to do an astronaut. I felt this was a good idea because man was the first on the moon. I started with 2 slightly larger pinch pots and then added the body with the scrap clay I had gathered. I cut into the clay to get the outline of the visor of the suit. I used underglaze to make the visor black and then clear glazed it to give it a shine. For the suit I used PC-3 which is supposed to fire a chrome color. Unfortunately this glaze didn't stick to the clay and started to flake off. I started to scratch off this glaze, but the more I took off, the more I liked the vintage look that it gave my sphere. I decided to keep it this way, but the areas with a thin layer fire a blue tint. I also enjoyed this project and in the future I want to make more round figures.
