the day & the night
5"x 9"
acrylic paint on wood
They say there is bound to be life beyond us. Beyond our Sun, our Moon, and our Stars. The universe is so vast it couldn't possibly be this empty. But if there are so many beings put there, then why is it that I feel so alone. Starring up at the sky makes me feel small. A part of me is out there somewhere in that abyss we call space. I don't feel whole.
For this piece I was building off of the momentum I had in using new and abstract medias in my last project. I decide to work with wood because I had never used it before. I was worried about using the wood burner as I felt I would be prone to mistakes while learning how to use it. My other option was to paint over the wood. I wanted to do something unique with my project, so I got the idea to break the wood. Unfortunately the wood didn't break evenly, but it was enough to be able to paint both pieces. My idea was to have the two pieces be opposites and chose to do day and night. I started with the sunrise side and went to painting the hills and then the sky. I did the same with the night sky. When the wood broke, I wanted to leave some of the shards and splinters to leave the connection between the two pieces. After I finished painting, I started writing the poem that was going to go with the artwork. I wrote it down on paper and knew that I wanted to place it in between the two pieces. With my poem cut out I glued it to the back of the wood to complete my piece.
