For this semester I chose architecture as my concentration that I will continue through the end of the year. I chose this topic because I have found a love for stone detailing and classic architecture as I've explored places like Old Port and Quebec. For my first piece I decided to go with a doric column. I used a reference off the internet but made the and measurement based on what I wanted them to be and what felt right to me on paper. I started shading with the base of the column and decided I wanted a pattern-like aspect to it. So I acted as if the light was coming in from the side as single beams of light. Therefore the shadows would be in between those beams making a striped pattern. The way I thought about the shading of the base was that they were little inlets and each one made a shadow of its own. Therefore I tried to make one side of each darker than the other. I feel this did come out how I wanted and got too dark. I much rather have it all look like the shading at the top of this column which is lighter.

Overall I like this piece for the beginning of my concentration and hope to improve on both shading and my use of watercolor. I liked the gestural nature of the watercolor I used, but I feel it contrasts with the precise and straight lines of the column. The color, especially the yellow, is very strong and doesn't fade like a ray of sunshine would. After this I hope to continues using watercolor and develop my skills in shading whether that be with pencil, colored pencil, or watercolor.
