This is A Man's World
9"x 12"
magazine on cardboard
Girls are held to the highest standards.
beauty, grace, delicate.
Always told to work hard on harder work.
That their greatest contribution to society was their looks,
and if you didn't have looks then there's no place for you.
There's no girl world in a man's society.
I enjoyed making this piece a lot. I started off thinking that I would do a mix of random magazine piece and make a poem out of what I see when it was completed. Then I started finding similarities in the text and figures I had been cutting out of each magazine. I didn't want this piece to be cluttered or have too much going on to where my message would get lost. I chose big and bold text to make it stand out against my pictures and background. The first picture I cut out was the volleyball player and although it doesn't fit into the idea of my piece on it's own, I wanted to be able to use it and so I cut out a picture of a female face and positioned it to be the object that the player was passing. It was nice being able to use text that was already printed and in different fonts as it made this piece more interesting instead of having everything in my hand writing. I felt confident in my composition so I didn't want to add anything to the background at the time, but now with feedback and time away from it I can see that adding details and drawings in pen would be a good way to enhance this piece.
