UNITED WE STAND

5"x 5"

watercolor & ink pen

For this piece I wanted to represent mental and physical disabilities while also trying to push myself to worry less about realistic features. I started by sketching different shapes knowing they would become the heads for my characters. After that I decided to do do different styles for each pair of eyes. This way each character was unique and personalized. In order to tie my piece to the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council, I researched their logo and painted each color of that logo onto each of the shirts of my characters. After finishing the watercolor on my piece, I felt there was something missing that would tie the whole thing together. I landed on the saying "united we stand" as it shows the solidarity between people with and without disabilities.

The one issue I wish I had caught before using water color and finalizing everything in pen was the last character on the right has an off-center neck.
