A Special Snowflake
5"x 5"
Watercolor & Ink-Pen
Each snowflake is as unique
as a pencil is ordinary,
as temporary as
a tattoo is permanent.
Each snowflake has a different story.
as numerous as the books in the world.
In a way
snowflakes are like people:
if you put enough together
you can make a snowman.
As I was creating this piece I was inspired by the large snow storm that had come as it was the first snowfall of the year. I wanted this piece to be something more cheerful than some of my latest poems and art. I also wanted the picture to be one that everyone could relate to. As a child I would always run outside as it started to snow and try to catch snowflakes on my tongue, so I felt this would perfectly represent my poem of snow. By relating my poem back to people it creates a better connection with my audience as they are people and not snowflakes. I am continuing to find watercolors easier to control and manipulate than other mediums I have used. Once I had my sketch on paper, I was quickly able to blend with the water and get vibrant colors. I chose to stay with cool colors for the hat in order to make the red of the tongue stand out. This is also the reason I broke the border with the tongue.
