Inspired Photogram

My project was inspired by the film photographer Garry sensitive. For the written project we researched two film photographers and compared their work. I choose Garry because I like the street style that he had rather than the posed photos that my other artist, Diane Arbus, used. For this we collected photos from different magazines to create a collage inspired by our photographer. I used different people and placed them on a background of a city. Then I had to invert the a photo of my collage and print it out on clear plastic in order to use it for my final print. We went into the dark room and exposed the light sensitive paper using the invert and then developed them using the chemical process. While creating my collage I had to look at the spacing between my chosen figures and how it affected the balance of my collage. When I developed my final print I made sure not to leave it in the developer too long and took it out when I saw a good range of value.

The background picture I chose had a high horizon line and selective focus which I carried into my photo. Then with the number of figures I used, my collage has informal balance because I placed them in certain areas. The main changes and decisions I had to make were about the figures I was going to use and where to put them. I was originally going to use other groups of people like the one I have on my collage, but I started looking for other people in magazines and found better figures to use. Then I had to decide how to arrange them together in one picture. I put the larger figures down at the bottom of the collage with the smaller ones on top of different objects in the background.

Garry did a street photography style and because this collage was inspired by him I had to incorporate both people and a cityscape. I found a good background of a city and placed my people in an interesting composition. I think my picture could've been more interesting and I could've added more people to take up more space on the right side.
