The Blind Man

7" x 10"

Acrylic, Collage

The blind man walks the path carved by others,

he has no choice.

A follower to those who call him.

The blind man confound to the ideas of others,

he has no choice.

A body for those who dare to come near.

I have used collage in projects last year and wanted to revisit the medium. This poem was about a blind man and so I decided to do a portrait. I have not done many portrait style pieces and felt that a collage would be a good introduction to this style as my painting wouldn't have to be perfectly proportionate. I went through multiple magazines picking out eyes, noses, mouths, and skin that I could use to complete my face. As I arranged the piece of magazine clippings, I made sure that none of the same tones were together. I felt that if there were too many pieces of the same tone clustered together, it wouldn't allow the piece to look like a collage.

This project is a lot larger than the ones I have done so far this year. By doing a collage I was able to fill this space quicker than if I painted it. I chose to do a solid color for the background in order to contrast the hard lines in the collage. I chose blue as the color because the poem creates a dismal mood and blue is associate with sadness. I added the shoulders using cut-out of flowers in order to establish a based for the head.

It is hard to lose a key sense. It inhibits a person's ability to navigate the world. I tried to convey this heavy impact on someone's life through the broken pieces of magazine.
