Inclusion Project

This project was entirely based around the theme of inclusion. Inclusion of mental, physical, and learning disabilities. I started sketching my piece a couple random figures, but I didn't know what to do with them at first. The more I looked, the more it seemed like they were in some sort of 5k race. This was the idea I started to go with and added more people each with a different disability. Now the idea for this is not that they're racing against each other, but that everyone should have a fair shot at winning in life even if they are faced with a disability. I colored in the t-shirt of the racers with the colors of the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council who are the organizers for this project. There is a range in age of the people in the piece because people of all ages suffer from different disabilities. in the background I drew many figures and decided to make them shadows because the focus is on the inclusion of others with disabilities.

There is a lot of shapes and negative space formed by the lines and figures in this piece. I tried to place meaning with the colors that I included in this by going with the colors of the organization. Being the only people with color in the photo brings emphasis on the racers and draws the viewer's eyes towards them instead of the background. All the shadow figures in the background create a grouping as they are all the same figure.
