With this concentration project I wanted to create a more homely looking piece compared to my last two paintings of more modern buildings. I started as I usual and sketched out my piece while using a reference for help with proportions and angles. On this piece I broke the border on the right side because I didn't realize how much space was left, but I also felt that the section I had drawn was important and added detail so I decide to leave it in. I used the same process as before with using a base layer of watercolor and then getting progressively darker shades. Going over spaces with a gestural brush stroke gives my paintings a looser feel while creating shadows and highlights. For the second painting I experimented with ink instead of watercolor. All the same I sketch my piece and when I felt the proportions were correct I started using a mix of yellow, orange, and brown ink to color the walls. For the different shading I would add more of one color to the mixture of colors. This allowed my shadows to be more than just black space. With this piece it was different doing the gestural strokes because the ink has very strong colors and gave me more saturation in my previous layers. I added blue to the sky to emphasis the buildings and their shapes.
