Running Down

5.5"x 6.5"

watercolor and ink pen on watercolor paper

I can feel them,

running down my cheek.

the taste of salt has never been so bitter.

I can feel it,

trickling down my arm.

the sight of red has never been so vibrant.

As our time between projects decreases, my ideas have to be changed in order to complete projects on time. My first idea was to create a hand coming out of a mouth. I had found a good reference picture of a hand and was able to replicate the angles from there. I then went in and tried to outline the mouth around it. I soon realized that this would be challenging and that I didn't have the right angles to create it how I wanted. I still wanted to include a hand in my project, but I didn't know what to do with it. In the end I drew a simple drip of blood coming from one end of the paper to the end of the hand. I used water colors to add color to my piece and outlined it all in pen when I was finished. When the piece was finished I thought about what I would write for the poem and where I would put it. Once I had my final poem, I went straight to writing it in pen. This turned out to be a bad decision as I misspelled a word on the second line. Luckily I had download a photo of my project on the computer and was able to reprint it. From there I re-outlined the hand in black and used the red to color the drip. From there I wrote to poem in pencil this time and once everything was right I went over it in pen. I chose to write my poem upside down in order to force other to look closely at the painting to read it.
