Look away from the end of the world.
For this piece I was focused on the recent climate crisis and climate strikes that are happening around the world. I knew I wanted to capture the need for our forests and trees while creating my poem and my artwork. I started with writing my poem, although at one point I almost started over with a different topic. I continued because I knew I could use paper as my medium as it connected directly to the subject of my poem. I started with many different sized circles of toned paper that I used for the trunk of my tree. I pieced these together with tiny strips of paper folded accordion style. As the tree got taller and I started adding leaves, the tree got more top heavy. This caused it to fall to its side. I used tape to try and hold some of the levels together making it less likely to topple over. I placed this tree on the top left corner of the background paper to allow for space to incorporate lines from the poem. I wrote these lines in white pencil in order to contrast the black paper I used. Although this one isn't my favorite concentration so far, I am proud that I stuck with it and finished.
