Whatchama Draw It

We were tasked with creating an image from a random card give to us by Mrs. Medsker. My card said to draw a chicken playing piano. After I drew the first chicken, I then drew the piano behind him to make it look like he was playing it. I felt the rest of the paper was bland, so I added a second chicken that was dancing towards the front. I knew I wanted the chicken to look more cartoonistic than realistic. I did the basic shape of the chicken based on a picture I remember. The material I used was graphite and I blended the wings with my finger. I chose this card over the other card I was given because it seemed more practical and easier to picture in my head. One element I used was shape. I made the shape of the chickens more fluid and the lines curved. The principle I used was emphasis by making the line of the chicken darker than the piano in order for people to be more drawn to the chicken rather than the piano itself.

My picture showcases formal balance. When I first drew the piano and the first chicken, I realized it was off to the right side of the paper. This later prompted me to draw the second chicken more towards the left side of the paper to balance the picture. I changed many small details when drawing this picture. I had to change the shape of the chicken, the angle of the piano, and what to do with the rest of the blank space. The biggest change was adding the other chicken into the picture.

As I said before, I chose to draw a chicken playing piano as my prompt for this tiny project. I made the chicken look like he had just finished big note and the other chicken was in her final dance pose. I thought of the drawing more like a ballet and the chickens were on a stage. I wish I had spent more time on this quick sketch. If I did I'm sure it would've turned out better and I would've been able to add more detail to the picture.
