#2

For my second concentration project I drew inspiration from roman architecture in the first piece. I sketched out my basic look using a reference photo and made adjustments based on the perspective I was using. In the second painting I ended up cropping the photo I was using and only drawing half of it. This made the proportions of my painting easier for me to do as I was working with less. Once everything was sketched in pencil I started using watercolor to fill in my pieces. I started with a lighter layer for every color. After those layers dried I usually went back through with a darker shade and used a more gestural brush stroke. In the second piece I tried to create the effect of light and shadow that was in the photo reference I used. This was more challenging than I had expected it to be trying to create a fade between the yellow light and the red brick. It forced me to use darker colors than I had previously used in the first piece. In order to finish off both pieces I went in with a black pen and went over the sketch lines I had made. That made my lines stronger and brought a greater feeling of finalization to both of my pieces. I like these paintings better than my first concentration piece. I feel they show more of my skills and growth.
