For this project we had to redesign the american flag in a new interesting way. I used the traditional star shape and the red, white, and blue colors. For this I measured out my star and then colored it in with blue chalk. I measured the rest of the stars around the original one. I colored every other star line with red while leaving the others white as like the american flag. I chose to do chalk because I felt it would get a better, brighter color than oil pastels or colored pencil. This piece showcases multiple elements and principles of design such as line, shape, color, and pattern.
The composition rule that is most evident in my project is repetition with all the different stars. It also incorporates formal balance by having equal stripes on both sides. At first I wanted to use oil pastels, but had no luck finding them. I did find some chalk pastels instead and decided those would work just as well.
My idea came from the design of the captain america shield. If I were to do anything different it would have to be changing my material. The chalk was really messy and got all over the white spaces. The smudges got everywhere on the paper and it looks unfinished.
