Stepped on by The King

3"x 8"

Watercolor and Ink Pen

There is greed in the world.

Built from jealousy and rage,

Born on the idea that what is not theirs

should be.

That the world is to be ruled

and they should be king.

Greed breeds evil,

and evil breeds kings.

For this project I was inspired by my earlier project Inner Rage. I was originally planning to create a face just like that project but it didn't turn out to my expectations. The watercolor I chose for the skin turned out to be more of a mustard yellow then a natural brown. A I went back through to erase my sketch line, it was clear that the watercolor had not absorbed fully into the paper, which resulted in the paper peeling. I decided to scrap the project, but still used the same poem to inspire my new creation.

The new idea came about when deciding the size of my piece. I wanted to do something longer compared to my other projects, while also keeping the piece small in total. For some reason I landed on a height of 8 inches and a width of 3 inches as it fit what I wanted. I wanted to continue with a character similar to the one pictured in Inner Rage, but have my project be different from that piece. I got the idea of using this unique perspective as my poem is about greed and how those who are greed don't care for others. After sketching out my person, I wanted a creative way to incorporate my poem into the artwork as I had been given much feedback to do such. I thought it would be a good idea to write the poem in the sole of the shoe as it was the main focus of the piece. After everything was set in pencil, I went through and lined it in pen to finish the piece.

The more I completed this piece, the more I felt it was better than the original design I was going to do.
