Recognition Characters

Elongated body with long jaws and sharp teeth; adipose fin present; base of the anal and caudalk fins are usually the same.

Color

Sandy colored body with eight diamond-shaped marks on the side.

Habitat & Depth

Sand near the reef ledge; favors shallow waters but is found down to 300 feet.

Burrows into sand and is an energetic predator commonly considered a nuisance by fishermen.
