Recognition Characters
Similar to the Aluterus schoepfi, however has a deep groove into which the dorsal spine folds.
Color
Generally dark brown with two dull yellow stripes that become more solid closer to the peduncle; small orange spots scattered on side and two white spots on the caudal peduncle.
Habitat & Depth
Stay close to the bottom, typically around complex structure off the substrate for refuge.
Distribution at GRNMS
Rare; more common in deep water
Geographic Range
Massachusetts to Brazil, also in the E. Atlantic

Hide in holes and cracks for protection
