Recognition Characters
Disc-shaped. No holes or slits in the body. Densely covered with fine spines. Pentagonal petal design on back.
Color
Different shades of brown when alive. Test is gray in dead specimens.
Habitat & Depth
Lie in sandy areas around reefs.
Distribution at GRNMS
Rare. Found on sandy bottoms away from ledges and rocky outcroppings.
Geographic Range
North Carolina south to Brazil
Behavior & Notes
Burrows beneath sand during day and occasionally forages at night.
