Shell legth: 2-5cm (1-2") Shell height: 2-4cm (1-1.5")

Recognition Characters

Shell is thick, strong, and deeply inflated. Posterior slope of shell is sharply descending. Has 33-36 radial ribs with 3 prominent, high umbones along the hinge. Shape of shell is obliquely squarish.

Color

Exterior colors can range from orange, brown, or dark reddish-brown sometimes mottled. Interior is pale white.

Habitat & Depth

Sand. 2-200m deep.

Distribution at GRNMS

Common. Found buried in sandy areas adjacent to reef.

Geographic Range

North Carolina south to Brazil.
