Recognition Characters

Irregularly and broadly oval to almost circular in shape. Attached to substrate by deeply cupped right valve, left valve is flatter. Has scaly, concentric growth ridges that are often eroded.

Color

Exterior a mix of white, pink, and purplish red. Interior is mostly white tinged with brown

Habitat & Depth

Attach to rocks or within crevices of reef. Below intertidal to 76m.

Distribution at GRNMS

May be common but unnoticeable due to cryptic nature.

Geographic Range

North Carolina south to Brazil, Caribbean, West Indies, and Gulf of Mexico

Behavior & Notes

This species is also referred to as the False Jewel Box. It is the only common left-handed jewel box in the Atlantic.
