Recognition Characters
Valves are equal; gape at rear end for siphons; umbones close together, nearer to the front end. Surface is irregular with coarse concentric growth lines. Siphons with red tips fused into a neck, are not completely retractable, with tough wrinkled skin.
Color
Chalky-white with yellowish-gray periostracum.
Habitat & Depth
In cracks and holes within rocks or ledges, also intertidally on pilings or coarse gravel bottoms. Shallow water to deeper offshore reefs.
Distribution at GRNMS
Common. Attached to crevices within ledges.
Geographic Range
Western Atlantic from Arctic to the West Indies. Eastern Pacific from Alaska to Panama
