Size
Length: 4-7cm (1.75-2.75")
Recognition Characters
Has an elongated shell that is almost cylindrical. Small, pointed conical spire. Body whorl is long and slightly convex. Aperture runs length of body whorl and is narrow and wider at base.
Color
Glossy. Grayish to yellowish, with irregular reddish-brown zigzag markings. Markings darker below suture.
Habitat & Depth
On sandy bottoms from shallow water to 46m depth.
Distribution at GRNMS
Rare. Only empty shells collected inhabited by hermit crabs. May be more common inshore.
Geographic Range
North Carolina to Florida, Texas and Brazil.
Behavior & Notes
Common predator found in intertidal areas. It lives just below surface with only its siphon extended above sand. Preys upon bivalves, egg cockles, coquina shells, and small crustaceans.
