Colonies stolonal. Hydrorhiza overgrows the hydrocaulus of other hydroid species. Hydrocaulus gives rise laterally to short pedicels with cylindrical hydrothecae curved towards front of host.

May be common but unnoticeable because of small size. Attached to other hydroids such as Dynamena quadridentata or Sertularia sp..

Wide Circumtropical distribution. Eastern and Western Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans

H. scandens is mostly epiphytic on other species of hydroids.
