Size

Length: Male up to 17cm (7"), Female up to 28cm (11")

Recognition Characters

Integument thin, polished, translucent. Carapace with median carina continuous anteriorly with rostrum and extending nearly to posterior border of carapace, flanked on each side by a broad rounded longitudinal groove. Rostrum curved with 7-10 sharp teeth dorsally and 2-3 teeth ventrally.

Color

Variable. Gray, reddish brown, pinkish or bluish gray with a distinct spot of darker color at the pleural juncture of the 3rd and 4th abdominal segments. Tail fan is transparent and edged with blue.

Habitat & Depth

Estuaries and inner oceanic littoral, predominately over sand, shell-sand or coral-mud bottoms. Shallow water to 330m and may be deeper.

Distribution at GRNMS

Not often encountered, but more common in estuarine and bay habitats of coastal Georgia.

Geographic Range

Chesapeake Bay south through the Florida Straits to the Yucatan Peninsula. West Indies. Major areas of abundance are off West Florida.

Behavior & Notes

This is a commercially important species. Color and differences in rostrum distinguish P. duorarum from P. brasiliensis.
