Recognition Characters
This sponge grows in irregular masses, sometimes with an inverted pear shape where the distal portion of the sponge is larger than the smaller proximal base. The surface is strongly conulose, covered with abundant, stout, projecting fibers. Cortex of sponge is semi-translucent. Interior of sponge is marked by many circular canals which open to irregularly placed oscules. Oscules are small.

Grayish-white exterior, tan interior
Habitat & Depth
Attach to underside of reefs. To 30m.
Distribution at GRNMS
Common at GRNMS under ledges and in crevices. Sponge may be somewhat cryptic in its distribution.

North Carolina south to Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico
