Recognition Characters

Rostrum nearly straight or somewhat decurved, almost reaching end of antennular peduncle, bearing 10-12 regularly spaced teeth with 1st tooth directly over or immediately behind orbital margin. Eyes are well developed. First legs with carpus and chela. Chela rather thickset; fingers shorter than palm, unarmed. Carpus and merus are about equal length. Second legs strong and unequal, larger 2nd leg with chela almost equal to bulk of body. Telson has 2 pairs of dorsal spines and 3 pairs of spines on posterior margin.

Color

Clear, milky white; integument so transparent that color of internal organs is plainly visible.

Habitat & Depth

Lives in association with sponges and other snapping shrimps. 18 to 73m.

Distribution at GRNMS

May be common. Associated with sponges on ledges or scarps.

Geographic Range

Beaufort, North Carolina to Pensacola, Florida

Behavior & Notes

When disturbed these shrimp are able to make a snapping sound with the large chela that is nearly as loud as true snapping shrimps.
