Recognition Characters
Dome-shaped. Spire is low with slightly convex whorls. Body whorl is strongly rounded. Umbilicus is fairly broad and partially covered by a whitish to chestnut brown button-like pad. Aperture is semicircular and interior is glossy. Operculum is thin and horny.
Color
Body whorls brownish-tan. Early whorls near spire bluish-purple mixed with white or cream
Habitat & Depth
Sandy bottoms. To 25m.
Distribution at GRNMS
Occasional. May be common on sandy bottoms near reef areas. Both voucher specimens have been empty shells.
Geographic Range
Gulf of Mexico, Florida north to Massachusetts
Behavior & Notes
The name shark eye is derived from the dark early whorls being surrounded by paler succeeding whorls giving the appearance of an eye.
