Recognition Characters

Sponge can grow in two growth forms. (1) Flabellate-pedunctulate with some digital processes arising from central laminae. (2) Fan-shaped laminae arising from a short pedicel. Surface is finely puntate and microscopically hispid with projecting spicules. Beautiful stellate pattern of radiating grooves mark the location of the small oscules. The internal skeleton has a stiff central core that anchors it to the substrate and gives the sponge an overall firm feel. The spicules are of three types (1) stout styles, most abundant (2) thin styles of dermal distribution and (3) less abundant oxeas more common towards interior of sponge. All spicules are somewhat curved.
