Shell length: 2-5cm (0.75-2")

Recognition Characters

Shell is irregularly circular to broadly ovate. Shell valves are thin and brittle. Shell is smooth except for fine growth lines or irregular wrinkles. May be radially ridged. Interior is shiny and pearly; left valve has an oval, dull white, central area and 3 roundish muscle scars. Right valve has one round muscle scar.

Color

Translucent. Exterior silvery white or sometimes yellowish or orange.

Habitat & Depth

Attaches to rocks, shells, logs, boats, and piers. Shallow water to 20m.

Distribution at GRNMS

Rare at GRNMS. Usually found on shallower reefs.

Geographic Range

Cape Cod south to Brazil.

Behavior & Notes

If attached to another shell, growth pattern of left valve may resemble that of shell it is attached to.
