Recognition Characters

Lower valve is rounded with about 25 whitish ribs with wide grooves in between. Ribs on flat upper valve are rounded.

Color

Color variable, most often whitish-yellow or red-purple or reddish brown. Interior is white.

Habitat & Depth

In sand or soft sediment bottoms.

Distribution at GRNMS

Rare on reef. May be more common on sandy and muddy substrates around reef.

Geographic Range

North Carolina south to Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico
