Carapace width: 0.5cm (0.25")

Recognition Characters

This crab is small. Overall carapace shape is spherical. Antennae are long and almost same width as carapace. Eyes are well developed. Chelipeds are long and heavy and very roughly tuberculate. Exterior edge of claws fringed with hair. Carpus has one large interior spine and small spines on anterior border.

Dirty gray to cream white

Habitat & Depth

Free living among corals, rocks, and sponges. Shallow water to 171m.

Distribution at GRNMS

Not often seen because of small size. May be common when found in association with Ircinia sponges and Oculina corals.

Geographic Range

North Carolina south to West Indies. Parts of Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico
