Size

Recognition Characters

Exterior of shell is rough and spiny. Overall, the shell is moderately low and thin with spiral apex near edge but not projecting. Spines can run in columns. Half of underside of shell is reinforced by a shelly platform.

Color

Outer shell is reddish-brown with spines flecked or tipped with white. Underside of shell is a mottled brown. Platform is glossy white.

Habitat & Depth

Attaches to rocks, other shells, and mangrove roots. Relatively shallow to 10m.

Distribution at GRNMS

Rare at GRNMS. Usually found in shallower water.

Geographic Range

North Carolina to Florida Keys, West Indies and Texas. On west coast California to Chile.
