Recognition Characters

Rostrum slender, about 1.5 times as long as supraoccipital spines. Supraoccipital spines entirely cover eyes. First pair of legs chelate, very unequal. Large chela with small, acute dorsal spine at distal margin of palm. Telson with sides somewhat convergent, posterior with two spines with inner spine much longer than outer. Telson has two pairs of dorsal spines, 1st at 1/3 length, 2nd at 2/3 length.

Color

Body and legs are translucent pinkish red. Large claw is pink, changing to green on fingers.

Habitat & Depth

Often associated with large sponges on reefs or within crevices and cracks of reefs.

Distribution at GRNMS

Common. Under shells, rubble, coral, rock or interior of sponges.

Geographic Range

Beaufort, North Carolina south to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, Gulf of California
