Size

Shell Length: 2.5-4.5 cm (1-2"). Slightly less wide

Recognition Characters

High-spired, thick shell, aperture round, umbilicus absent. Whorls convex and somewhat flattened in middle with beaded or knobby spiral cords; knobs on cords are occasionally scalelike. Operculum is oval, white, and smooth.

Grayish to brown or yellowish-orange, irregularly spotted with white or brown

Habitat & Depth

Under and among rocks in shallow water.

Rare.

Geographic Range

North Carolina to Brazil

Sculpture, color, and strength of shell highly variable. Species name is the Latin name for "chestnut."
