"O mein Papa" is a German song, as related by a young woman remembering her beloved, once-famous clown father. It was written by Swiss composer Paul Burkhard in 1939 for the musical Der Schwarze Hecht (The Black Pike), reproduced in 1950 as Feuerwerk (Fireworks) to a libretto by Erik Charell, Jürg Amstein, and Robert Gilbert. In 1954, that musical was turned into the film Feuerwerk with Lilli Palmer.
Paul Burkhard (21 December 1911(1911-12-21) in Zürich - 6 September 1977(1977-09-06) in Zell) was Swiss composer. He wrote primarily Oratoria, Musicals and Operettas.
His probably most famous artistic creation was the song Oh mein Papa (Oh my Papa), about the death of a beloved clown-father, written for the musical "Der Schwarze Hecht" (re-issued in 1950 as "Feuerwerk") that premiered in April 1939. The song rose to #1 on the Sheet Music Chart and stayed in the chart for 26 weeks. The song has been performed and recorded by numerous artists since then, including Alan Breeze, Annette Klooger, Billy Cotton, Billy Vaughn, Connie Francis, Diana Decker, Eddie Calvert, Eddie Fisher, The Everly Brothers, Harry James, Ken Mackintosh, Lys Assia, Malcolm Vaughan, Muriel Smith, Ray Anthony & his Orchestra, Russ Morgan & his Orchestra, The Beverley Sisters, The Brasshats, The Radio Revellers, and many others.

O MEIN PAPA
Papa wie ein Pfeil
Sprang hinauf auf die Seil.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Er spreizte die Beine
Ganz breit auseinand',
Sprang hoch in die Luft
Und stand auf der Hand.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Lachte: Haha!
Und machte: Haßa
Ganz sachte Haßa
Und rief: Eh la hopp!
Eh la hopp! Eh la hopp!
Er ritt auf die Seil
Ganz hoch in die Luft.
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
Das konnte er machen
Zwölf mal ohne Mih!
Er lachte dazu
Und fürchte sich nie!
Eh la hopp, eh la hopp, eh la hopp!
O mein Papa
War eine wunderbare Clown.
O mein Papa
War eine große Kinstler.
Hoch auf die Seil,
Wie war er herrlich anzuschau´n!
O mein Papa
War eine schöne Mann!
Wie, wie er lacht,
Sein Mund sie sein so breit, so rot
Und seine Aug'
Wie Diamanten strahlen.
O mein Papa
War eine wunderbare Clown.
O mein Papa
War eine große Kinstler!
Hoch auf die Seil,
Wie war er herrlich anzuschau'n!
O mein Papa
War eine schöne Mann!
Ein schöner Mann!
Ein schöner Mann!

Oh! My Papa
words by John Turner & Geoffrey Parsons
music by Paul Burkhard
Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful;
Oh, my papa, to me he was so good.
No one could be so gentle and so lovable;
Oh, my papa, he always understood.
Gone are the days when he would take me on his knee;
And with a smile, he'd change my tears to laughter.
Oh, my papa, so funny, so adorable;
Always the clown, so funny in his way.
Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful;
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.
Oh, my papa,
Oh, my papa,
Oh! my papa.
Italian
Quand'ero bambina, l'amico più caro
sei stato tu solo, Papá.
Tornavi piccino per farmi giocare
e imitavamo i negri e gli indù:
Ta ta pum, ta ta pum, ta ta pum.
Fra tanto clamore
sembrava il Far West,
e il tam-tam dei tamburi laggiù:
Ah la hop, ah la hop, ah la hop, ah la hop.
Se a volte guastavo i miei balocchi,
col tuo bel sorriso
baciandomi gli occhi,
si dileguavan tristezza e dolor.
Ah la hop, ah la hop, ah la hop, ah la hop.
Oh, era così bello!
Ti gridavo:
"Bravo Papà, bene,
ancora, ancora,
ancora...."
Oh mein Papá
sei l'uomo più adorabile,
oh mein Papá
sei l'uomo più sincer.
Oh mein Papà
sei tanto caro e amabile
e nel tuo cuor
c'è solo la bontá.
Degli occhi tuoi
gli sguardi m'accarezzano
perchè lo so,
per te son bimba ancora.
Oh mein Papà
mio vero amico unico,
oh mein Papà
tu tutto sei per me.
Oh mein Papà
potessi far miracoli
vorrei tornar
bambina insieme a te.
Oh mein papà!
Oh mein papà!
