imagine how daunting

for an Alpino keeping guard!


At midnight the next man comes

along the commander of the guard

hey, sentry, back to your tent

in your tent to rest.


When I went to my tent

I heard a sound through the valley

felt water run down my back

heard rocks rolling.


While I slept in my tent

I dreamt I was with my girl

instead I was a sentry

keeping guard over the foreigner.
