Chernyy voron (Черный ворон) (Black Raven)

Old sad song very well known in Russia in all its variations. Many people think it is of an unknown author, but in reality the words have an author: the song was composed by a corps poet, non-commissioned officer of the Nevskoy Infantry Regiment, Nikolai Fyodorovich Verevkin – 1800-?. Apparently, the melody for the song was inherited from some earlier popular song. But here the researchers can not help in terms of finding a musical source for the song.

General Peter Krasnov in his book “Pictures of the former Pacific Don” (1909) writes that the song “Black Raven” was born in the Caucasus during the struggle between Don Cossacks and Caucasian mountaineers (1801–1864): “Many Cossacks died in the mountains and valleys There is neither a cross nor a monument over the Caucasus and above their unknown graves. The dead alone, without witnesses, the Don people died in the mountains, surrounded by ravens and predatory eagles. This sad Cossack song was born there. ”

Of course, the song "Black Raven" was not born, but only changed in the Caucasian wars, leaving behind the meaning of the original version.

There have been many other versions of this song over the years and events, with different words, such as those during the First World War and during the second.

The soldier's song of the XIX century "Under the green wilderness" became popular in the full sense of the word. Today, the most famous song of the Nevsky Infantry Regiment occupies an honorable place in the repertoires of many performers - from folk ensembles to symphony orchestras, from rock bands to chamber singers. So in the male repertoire of the Folklore and Ethnographic Ensemble of the Kizhi Museum-Reserve, it is there, and you can hear it during the concerts of the collective.

Oh, corvo nero.

Sono ancora vivo!

Ti prego corvo nero, vola a casa

da mio padre e mia madre

E dai il mio straccio sanguinante

Alla mia giovane moglie.

Diglielo, corvo nero

Che ho sposato un'altra,

Che ho trovato una sposa

In un ampio campo oltre il fiume!

Il matrimonio era pacifico,

Sotto un cespuglio di salice,

Oh, pacifico, tranquillo,

Sotto un cespuglio di salice.

La mia sciabola tagliente era la sensale,

La mia baionetta era l'uomo migliore.

Oh, la mia sciabola tagliente,

La mia baionetta era l'uomo migliore.

Il proiettile ci sposò in fretta,

La madre terra ci sposò.

Oh, il proiettile in fretta,

La madre terra ci sposò!

Black Raven

Black raven, black raven,

Why do you circle over me?

You won't have your prey,

Black raven, I'm not yours!

Why do you spread wide your talons

Over my head?

If you hope for a game,

Black raven, I'm not yours!

I'll bind my deadly wound

With a gifted handkerchief,

And then speak to you

Of one thing only.

Fly to my home,

Tell my mother,

Tell my darling,

That I fell for the Homeland.

Take the bloody handkerchief

To my lovely sweetheart.

Tell her that she's free,

To another I am wed.

I took a bride who's quiet and modest,

In an open field under a bush,

The matchmaker was

My sharp sabre.

A tempered arrow wed us

Amidst fateful battle.

I see my death coming -

Black raven, I'm all yours!

I'm now all yours!
