An die Freude
From The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, by Ludwig van Beethoven (1824)
Lyrics from the "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with text additions made by Beethoven.
A passage from the final movement of the Ninth Symphony - Ode to Joy - was adopted as the official anthem of the European Union and the Council of Europe (1972).
There is also a version sung in Latin composed in 2003 by Peter Roland: “Himnus Europa”
An die Freude
«Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlischer, Dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
Was die Mode streng geteilt ;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
Mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund.
Freude trinken alle Wesen
An den Brüsten der Natur ;
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott!
Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen.
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder ! Über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest Du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such'ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.»

«Gioia, tu divina luce,
figlia degli Elisei,
noi entriamo ebbri e frementi,
dentro il tempio tuo.
La tua magia ricongiunge
ciò che la moda ha rigidamente diviso,
tutti gli uomini diventano fratelli,
dove freme l'ala tua.
L'uomo a cui la sorte benevola,
concesse di essere amico di un amico,
chi ha ottenuto una donna leggiadra,
unisca il suo giubilo al nostro!
Sì, - chi anche una sola anima
possa dir sua nel mondo!
Chi invece non c'è riuscito,
lasci piangente e furtivo questa compagnia!
Gioia bevono tutti i viventi
dai seni della natura;
tutti i buoni, tutti i malvagi
seguono la sua traccia di rose!
Baci ci ha dato e uva, un amico,
provato fino alla morte!
La voluttà fu concessa al verme,
e il cherubino sta davanti a Dio!
Lieti, come i suoi astri volano
attraverso la volta splendida del cielo,
percorrete, fratelli, la vostra strada,
gioiosi, come un eroe verso la vittoria.
Abbracciatevi, moltitudini!
Questo bacio vada al mondo intero Fratelli,
sopra il cielo stellato
deve abitare un padre affettuoso.
Vi inginocchiate, moltitudini?
Intuisci il tuo creatore, mondo?
Cercalo sopra il cielo stellato!
Sopra le stelle deve abitare!»
English:
Joy, beautiful spark of divinity,
Daughter from Elysium,
We enter, burning with fervour,
heavenly being, your sanctuary!
Your magic brings together
what custom has sternly divided.
All men shall become brothers,
wherever your gentle wings hover
Whoever has been lucky enough
to become a friend to a friend,
Whoever has found a beloved wife,
let him join our songs of praise!
Yes, and anyone who can call one soul
his own on this earth!
Any who cannot, let them slink away
from this gathering in tears!
Every creature drinks in joy
at nature's breast;
Good and Evil alike
follow her trail of roses.
She gives us kisses and wine,
a true friend, even in death;
Even the worm was given desire,
and the cherub stands before God.
Gladly, just as His suns hurtle
through the glorious universe,
So you, brothers, should run your course,
joyfully, like a conquering hero.
Be embraced, you millions!
This kiss is for the whole world!
Brothers, above the canopy of stars
must dwell a loving father.
Do you bow down before Him, you millions?
Do you sense your Creator, O world?
Seek Him above the canopy of stars!
He must dwell beyond the stars.
Anthem of Europe
Latin:
«Est Europa nunc unita
et unita maneat;
una in diversitate
pacem mundi augeat.
Semper regant in Europa
fides et iustitia
et libertas populorum
in maiore patria.
Cives, floreat Europa,
opus magnum vocat vos.
Stellaes signa sunt in caelo
aureae, quae iungant nos.»
(IT)
«È l'Europa ora unita
e che unita rimanga,
una nella diversità
accresca la pace del mondo.
Che regnino sempre in Europa,
lealtà e giustizia
e la libertà dei popoli
in una patria più grande.
O cittadini, che l'Europa risplenda,
una grande opera vi chiama.
Le stelle sono in cielo
auree, che ci uniscono.»
