William Owen, Cook

William Owen, Cook, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died on 3 November 1916, aged about 37 due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead in 1878. In 1911, aged 30, he lived at Ceris, Kingsland, Holyhead with his wife Margaret Owen (nee Williams) (28) and son Thomas John Owen (4 months, b.14 December 1910, d.1971). He was then employed as a Lampman for the LNWR Company. They married at Holyhead in 1909. In the Census his wife is described as a Farmer's daughter. Also at the house was his widowed mother, Margaret Owen, aged 64. In 1901 he previously lived with his widowed mother, Margaret Owen and older brother John at Kingsland. At that time he was employed as a Carriage Cleaner. He joined the LNWR Marine Department on 20 November 1914, probably as a replacement due to others leaving the employment for war service.His wife was awarded compensation of £4 a month.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2, Grave 1460. The grave is unmarked and is grassed over.
