John Williams, Seaman

John (Johnnie) Williams, Seaman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged 22, due to a collision at sea.

He was born at Port Dinorwic in about 1894, the second son of the late William and Jane Williams of Monfa, Port Dinorwic (now Y Felinheli). He joined the LNWR on 4 September 1915 having previously served as Ordinary Seaman on the Liverpool ship SS Ningchow from March to August 1915, recording his address as 39 Kingsland, Holyhead. Prior to the Ningchow he had served on the Carnarvon ship David Morris. In 1901 the family lived at 1 Florence Terrace, Portinorwic (Llanfair-is-Gaer). His father would seem to have remarried to Martha following the death of his first wife Jane. At home at this time were William Williams (38) employed as a Joiner (Undertaker?), Martha Williams (27), John Williams (7), Willie H Williams (5) and Jennie Williams (3). He later lived with his step-mother, Mrs. Martha Williams at Monfa, Port Dinorwic.

Whilst employed by the LNWR he lived (lodged?) at 36 Gilbert Street, Holyhead. He had previously served on HMHS Anglia and had survived her sinking the previous November.

His step-mother Martha Williams, brother Robert Williams and sister Jennie Williams attended his funeral.

His body was recovered and buried at Llanfair-is-gaer Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the Y Felinheli War Memorial.
