George Roberts, Leading Stoker

George Roberts, Leading Stoker, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died, on 3 November 1916, aged 53 due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead, in 1911 he lived at 5 Tower Gardens, Holyhead with his three sons - John Roberts (11), George Roberts (9) and Robert Arthur Roberts (5). He was a widower and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Evans (67) lived there acting as his housekeeper. All were born at Holyhead. He married Mary Ellen Evans in 1899 at Holyhead. She died in 1911, aged 44.

He joined the LNWR in April 1884 and was recently promoted to Leading Stoker.

His mother-in-law, Elizabeth Evans, was awarded compensation of £4 a month for the maintenance of his three children.

His body was recovered and buried at Maeshyfryd, Cemetery, Holyhead with his wife - Section 2, Grave 47.
