Hugh Rowlands, Ticket Clerk

Hugh Rowlands, Ticket Clerk/Purser, Mercantile Marine, RMS Leinster. Lost at sea, aged 43, as a result of enemy action in the Irish Sea on 10 October 1918.

He was born at Holyhead in 1874, the son of David and Mary Rowlands. He came from a long line of seafarers and first commenced work as a School Teacher at Park School, Holyhead before leaving to go to sea. He was the husband of Mary Catherine Rowlands (nee Williams) of 17 Maeshyfryd Road, Holyhead. His wife was from Llanfachraeth, Anglesey and they married at Holyhead in 1903. Hugh Rowlands had completed 21 years service with the CDSPCo prior to his death.

In 1911 his family resided at Lynwood, Maeshyfryd Road, Holyhead. At the address were his wife Mary Catherine Rowlands (35), Jane Mair Rowlands (5) and Gwyneth Rowlands (9 months).

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal

Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
