Robert Henry Jones, Royal Field Artillery

Gunner Robert Henry Jones, 193702, No. 2 Reserve Brigade (TF), Royal Field Artillery, died on home service on 2 January 1917 aged 35.

Robert Henry Jones was born at Holyhead on 25 August 1881. In 1911, aged 29, he lived with his mother, Ellen Williams (previously Jones, nee Evans) (52) and step-father Richard Williams (45) at 4 Tower Gardens, Holyhead. He was then employed as a Plumber at the Gas Works. His sister Agnes Ann Jones (23), was working as a Shop Assistant. He also had two step-brothers at the address - William Williams (15), a Telegraphic Messenger and Richard Williams (13). His father, Henry Jones, was the Landlord of the Llanfawr Arms, Holyhead who died at Holyhead in December 1889, also aged 35. His mother remarried in 1894 at Holyhead. His step-father came from Llanwrog, Anglesey and worked as a Labourer. His mother originated from Amlwch, Anglesey. All children were born at Holyhead.

It is believed that he died only a few months after joining the Army. There is no record of him receiving any service medals.

The edition of the 'Y Clorianydd' for Wednesday, 17 January 1917 records his burial on the previous Saturday (6 January). Records show that he died on 2 January 1917 at Prees Heath Army Hospital near Whitchurch, Shropshire. He was at the time serving at the Royal Artillery Training Camp at Bettisfield Park, near Whitchurch. The death of a Robert H Jones (age 36) was registered at Whitchurch in the first quarter 1917 (6a1152). He is not included on the CWGC Register although it is clear that he died as a serving soldier.
