Owen John Hughes, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry

Private, 21638, 1/4th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Died, aged 20, on 12 November 1918 at the Western Front.

The Battalion was initially attached to the Welsh Division. After service in Singapore it moved to France and landed at Le Havre on 27 July 1917 and then attached to 190th Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. It was then transferred to 56th Brigade, 19th (Western Division) on 4 February 1918. The last action the Battalion took part in was on the 6 November 1918 near Berttrechies when an Officer and three Privates were killed by shellfire. These were the last members of the Battalion reported to have been killed in action. The Battalion ended the war on 11 Nov 1918 at Bry, west of Bavai, France. As Private Hughes died at No.3 Casualty Clearing Station it is probable that it was the result of wounds received earlier.

Son of Henry and Maggie Hughes (nee Hughes), of 7, Whiston Street, London Road, Holyhead. In 1901 he lived with his parents and younger sister at 13 Llainfain, Holyhead. His father came from Llanynghenedl, Anglesey and was employed as a Stone Quarryman. His mother was born at Rhoscolyn, Anglesey.
